| New York City Draft
Riots |
Though it cannot be proven, there is
some circumstantial evidence that the Confederate government at Richmond had a
hand in provoking and escalating the violence of the New York City draft riots.
An elusive, shadowy figure whose name often appeared where acts of violence were
taking place had, once again, surfaced here as one of the very vocal instigators
involved in insiting the massive crowds who were on a deadly rampage through the
streets of New York City. Attention began to focus on him when he was killed in
the violence he himself insited. He was found to be wearing some old clothes
that looked as though they belonged to a laborer. He had on an old shirt, torn
trousers and other articles of clothing assosiated with the above mentioned type
of work. But, underneath he had on clothing that suggested a well-to-do
individual who was completely out of place in the clothes he was disquising
himsef with. He wore clean and pressed pants, Argile shit and socks, and a fine
pocket watch was found on his person as well.
Countless are the number of people who were killed or seriously injured
during the riots. An exact number can never be known because what often happened
when an individual was killed or hurt his comrades-in-violence would secret the
body away. Presumably administering to their friend whatever medical help he or
she was in need of. It can only be speculated what was done with the dead who
were wisked away before their identity was discovered. You can be sure the
Hudson River holds many secrets on that account.
